Better trailering technology like the improved ProGrade trailering system will make the upcoming 2020 GMC Sierra HD a true beast of burden.
To Boldly Tow Where no Truck has Towed Before
Lugging around cargo with ease and safety is one of the biggest priorities for the new 2020 GMC Sierra HD, with a host of new tech and tricks to boost the most robust heavy duty truck available to consumers.
One of the major highlights is the upcoming upgraded ProGrade Trailering System. With 15 camera views, such as a “transparent trailer” view that simulates seeing through the trailer, ProGrade will make towing safer and easier than ever before. Further control and information will be provided by the new iN Command control system.
Further improvements are provided by tools such as the MultiPro tailgate system, a state-of-the-art transforming tailgate that offers six different configurations to help getting yourself and your cargo in and out of the truck bed. For more details on this aspect, check out our previous blog post on the MultiPro.
“Trailering is the most important consideration for Sierra Heavy Duty customers, and the new features and technologies in the 2020 Sierra HD make it easier than ever to hitch a trailer and tow it confidently,” said Jaclyn McQuaid, vehicle chief engineer, Heavy Duty Trucks. “We’ve developed this new truck to offer the greatest trailering experience ever offered by GMC.”
The biggest feature GMC is pushing in the 2020 GMC Sierra HD is the newly-improved ProGrade Trailering System. The system will leverage numerous new tricks and optimizations to give an unprecedented level of ease and control for all your trailering and towing needs.
Seeing traffic and obstructions behind your trailer is one of the biggest inconveniences when trailering, but the new collection of cameras will offer a much better ability to see. The 15 different cameras will combine to give you the ability to virtually “see through” your trailer, as well as around the 2020 GMC Sierra HD itself.
If the cameras don’t do the job for you, the 2020 Sierra Heavy Duty will also feature all-new larger, door-mounted trailering mirrors with power controls for even more views of your towed goods.
Smart trailer technology will be expanded, thanks to the new iN∙Command control system from ASA Electronics. Drivers will be able to connect to the system via smartphone app and control it via their phone or with the Sierra’s infotainment system.
When using a compatible trailer, drivers will be able to check and control numerous features of their trailer. Want to turn on the water heater, check water levels, look at fuel reserves or crank up the AC for your trailer? If it is compatible with the system, you’ll be able to do so without leaving the cabin of your 2020 GMC Sierra HD.
Many other monitors and controls will be available via the in-vehicle Trailering App. You will be able to check their trailer’s lights and electronics as well as temperature and tire pressure.
Pre-Maintenance Reminders and Departure Checklists will keep you informed and ready to roll out. With the myGMC mobile app, you will be able to check many of these monitors out from the convenience of your phone.
If these features aren’t enough for you, the 2020 GMC Sierra HD will have a huge selection of additional available tech and hardware to push trailering to new heights.
The new Auto Electric Park Brake will allow for automatic application of the parking brake to keep your vehicle and trailer under control. Adding in Digital Variable Steering Assist will give you dynamically optimized power steering for better control as it optimizes for different driving scenarios such as trailering.
You will be able to select more aids such as Trailer Sway Control, Auto Grade Braking, Diesel Exhaust Braking, Hill Start Assist, Hill Descent Control and more.
Bigger and Better
All the tricks and tips in the world are useless if your truck isn’t powerful enough to tow your needs, and the upcoming 2020 Sierra Heavy Duty will have strength in spades. With 445 horsepower and 910 pound-feet of torque, the 2020 GMC Sierra HD’s Duramax turbo diesel engine is a beast to behold.
The engine will feature more new improvements this year such as increased cooling capacity and improved air induction. Keeping this bad boy cooled will be ensured by the dual-path intake system that will bring in cold, dense air from both the hood scoop and front grille.
The inclusion of the all-new 10-speed Allison automatic transmission means that all that power will be tightly control and delivered in the optimum range at all times and under all conditions.
With a bigger, stronger new frame, the 2020 GMC Sierra HD will be more capable than ever before. With a monsterous towing capacity reaching well over 30,000 pounds, it will truly live up to the Heavy Duty name.
