The Encore is getting a big brother. New details are out on the upcoming 2020 Buick Encore GX, including an official American release announcement.
America Getting an Encore Performance
News that the 2020 Buick Encore GX is coming to America officially broke at the end of May.
Announced in a new press release, the all-new crossover SUV is slated to release in early 2020 in American markets. Set up as a new Goldilocks option, the Encore GX will fit between the crossover’s subcompact Buick Encore cousin and the larger-yet-compact Buick Envision.
“As we look to the future of Buick, the Encore GX positions us strongly as a consideration for those who want to purchase small or compact SUVs,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president, Global Buick, and GMC, in the press release.
Digging into the Details
One example of how the 2020 Buick Encore GX will find the middle ground is with cargo capacity. Buick’s press release detailed the differences. Described as featuring a “purposefully designed cargo space,” the new crossover SUV will have almost five more cubic feet of capacity than the smaller Encore. The larger Envision will beat it by about 3 cubic feet, however.
The Encore GX will sport a suite of standard safety and driver assistance features. Some notable inclusions are the “Front Pedestrian Braking, Automatic Emergency Braking, Forward Collision Alert and Lane Keep Assist with Lane Departure Warning.”
Buick noted that the Encore GX will borrow the “innovative Rear Camera Mirror” from big brother Enclave, which will give drivers “a wide, less obstructed rear view while parking and driving.” A High Definition Surround Vision camera system will also be included.
Details are still under wraps when it comes to pricing and dimensions. Buick stated that those details will come “when the Encore GX begins arriving at U.S. dealers” in early 2020.
Introducing Amazon Alexa
GM Authority had a few more details on what to expect with the 2020 Buick Encore GX. The car site exclusively announced that the new crossover SUV will feature Amazon Alexa integration. GM Authority reported that this will be the first GM vehicle to offer the Amazon support. It is likely to come alongside the support for both Android Auto and Apple CarPlay that most GMC and Buick vehicles include.
The Amazon Alexa support comes courtesy of a new developer toolkit released by Amazon less than a year ago. GM Authority reported that it “includes all the core Alexa functions like streaming media, smart home controls, weather reports, and support for Alexa’s thousands of third-party skills.” Being designed with automobiles in mind, the software “also has features specifically for cars, such as navigation and destination search.”
Heads-Up Display Passed Down
GM Authority also spotted what appeared to be a heads-up display (HUD) in the promotional photos released by Buick. The car site was able to confirm that they did indeed spot a HUD and that it will be coming with the 2020 Buick Encore GX.
GM Authority described the HUD as “a small display that places a semi-transparent readout of key information in the driver’s field of vision, at the base of the windshield.” The car site went on to say that HUD systems such as this are great for safety.
Drivers of next year’s new crossover SUV will be able to see critical information such as navigation and engine speed right on the vehicle’s windshield. This avoids the dangers of taking your eyes off the road to look at the gauge cluster.
As GM Authority noted, the inclusion of a HUD is a bit of a surprise as the technology has so far been saved for more expensive GMC and Buick models. Though the GMC Silverado gained the HUD in this year’s refresh, the 2020 Buick Encore GX will be “the least premium GM vehicle to ever offer a HUD.”
First-Gen Not Going Anywhere
For fans of the current 2019 Buick Encore, have no fear. GM Authority confirmed that the so-called “first generation” Encore will still be sold in America for years to come. As the car site noted, a new version of the Encore exists in China, but that model won’t be taking a trip overseas.
The Chinese “GEM-based” Encore was built with special material and design requirements suited to the Asian market that make bring it to America daunting. If you’re a fan of the current “Gamma-based” Encore, Buick (and Diamond Buick GMC) would still love to sell you one for the foreseeable future.
